Lowdown: A half marathon that takes you round Aberdeen, passing some of its most famous landmarks, there’s also a 10K race on the same day.

3 Great North Run
When: Sunday 8 September
Lowdown: The most famous half-marathon in the UK, general entry has now sold out for the Great North Run, but there’s still plenty of charity spots on offer.

4 New Forest Half Marathon
When: Sunday 8 September
Lowdown: Starting from New Park Showground, this fast and flat half marathon will take you round some of the New Forest’s most beautiful trails. Keep your eyes peeled for the New Forest ponies en route and dig your trail shoes out for this multi-terrain course.

5 Richmond Runfest
When: Sunday 15 September
Lowdown: A beautiful, flat course taking you through Kew Gardens and then on a scenic tour of Richmond, finishing at Old Deer Park. A brilliantly organised event, there’s still charity places available if you’re hoping to run, and also a full marathon on the same day if you’re feeling up for the challenge.

6 Disneyland Paris Magic Run
When: September 22 September
Lowdown: If a half marathon through the heart of Disneyland Paris is your dream race, there’s still spots available. When it comes to signing up, there’s two different options – you can either buy your bib on it’s own, or included in a package that includes accommodation options. Expect lots of Disney characters supporting along the way.

7 Windsor Half Marathon
When: Sunday 29 September
Lowdown: Royal Wedding fans, get ready to soak up the sights as you start and finish this 13.1 mile race on the Long Walk to Windsor Castle. You probably won’t spot any royals, but the 1.5 mile stretch towards the castle is sure to be pretty memorable.

8 Bournemouth Marathon Festival
When: Sunday 6 October
Lowdown: As part of the Bournemouth Marathon Festival, the half marathon course follows the full marathon, coastal route, which starts at Kings Park, before making its way down to the seafront, taking in Boscombe and Bournemouth pier. A flat, scenic half, that makes the perfect start for those thinking about spring marathon training.

9 Cardiff Half Marathon
When: Sunday 6 October
Lowdown: Wales’ largest road race, the Cardiff Half Marathon starts outside Cardiff Castle, before taking in the cities sights. General entries are now sold out, but you can still sign up to run for a charity.

10 Oxford Half
When: Sunday 13 October
Lowdown: The fast and flat 13.1 mile route kicks off from Oxford City centre, past Oxford’s museums, universities and parks. A Virgin Sport event, expect live music, local DJ’s and a great atmosphere.

11 Royal Parks Half Marathon
When: Sunday 13 October
Lowdown: One of London’s most popular races, taking you through four of London’s eight royal parks, there’s still the option to sign up for a charity spot if you want to run in this year’s race.

Lowdown: A marathon weekend with a great deal of energy, if you’re not quite ready to take on 26.2, there’s also an Amsterdam Half Marathon, which follows a similar course and finishes at the Olympic Stadium.
