THE Durban promenade is a hive of activity, a popular spot for fitness fundis to work out. The Golden Mile offers the community several ways to get fit for free, and there are stunning ocean views to enjoy along the way.

Here are a few ideas for the fitness fundis or anyone keen to up their game when it comes to exercise.

Outdoor gym

The Durban promenade boasts two outdoor gyms with several exercise stations. Not only can gym bunnies get a workout with a sea view, but newbies can sample some gym equipment and perhaps get a little advice from the pros who frequent the gym.

Get those steps

The Durban promenade offers an 8km stretch from uShaka Beach to Blue Lagoon Beach – perfect for walkers, joggers and runners to get those steps in.  This offers walkers and runners a great way to gradually build up their strength by tackling a smaller stretch and working their way up to the full distance with time. There are signs along the way to mark the distance – adding a nice sense of achievement to the exercise. To take things up a notch, try a walk or run along the beach sand – you are sure to feel the burn.

Play a sport

Grab a soccer ball and a few friends, and enjoy a game of soccer or practise a few passes on the beach. Sport is a great way to get fit and have fun along the way. A volleyball net set up at North Beach for the festive period offers another avenue for sports fans to work up a sweat.

Take a ride

The promenade offers a great cycle route free from the stress of the road shared with motorists and pedestrians. With bike hire available along the Golden Mile, cycling is accessible to everyone. The promenade offers a mostly flat track to get a hang of cycling and enjoy the ride without too much hard work required.

With bikes for hire along the promenade, the community can opt for a cycle.
