Runners of all shapes, sizes and ages braved the steep inclines and sharp downhills and gave it their all.
While dark clouds hung ominously in the morning sky, keen runners rose early to take on the annual The Rest Trail Run on Saturday morning. This year’s run took place over three distances, including five-, 10- and 21-kilometre races. Runners of all ages, shapes and sizes took on the challenge and braved the brisk morning air to tackle the race which wound its way through The Rest Nature Estate and made its way to Curro Nelspruit.

Participants who completed the trail each received a flower pot for their efforts. The 21-kilometre run started at 07:00, while the 10- and five-kilometre runners were off the mark at 07:15 and 07:30 respectively. The trail run followed the wave-start format, which means that more than one participant could start at any interval. They braved the steep inclines and the sharp downward slopes along the energy-sapping route and gave their all.
The provisional trail run results were as follows, according to webscorer. In the five-kilometre category, Kian Mouton finished first in a time of 24:47,7, followed by Pascal Bovee who registered a time of 26:25,0. Chantal Bovee claimed the third place not too far behind Pascal, with a time of 26:42,9.

Over the 10-kilometre distance, Andreas van Heerden crossed the finish line in 50:45,7, clinching first place. He was followed closely by Charles Nel with a time of 52:20,9 and Dazel Sanderson with a time of 55:25,1. The gruelling 21-kilometre run was won by Freedom Makhubela in a time of 2:00:22,5.
Dimingo Dlamini came in second place with a time of 2:06:45,2, followed closely by Hannes Bensom with a time of 2:07:47,2. According to the provisional results, this year’s trail run featured 373 runners and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Nelspruit Hospice.
