Running has transformed my health

I’m a nerd. Running hasn’t changed that. I love numbers and statistics and tracking things. That’s one thing running has given me a lot of. I’ve used the data I’ve collected to track my transformation from being a pre-diabetic doughy computer geek into becoming a non-diabetic, 100-pound lighter, fit and healthy computer geek.

Why I run

It’s something I feel I’m good at; It’s a way to efficiently stay in shape; It’s an opportunity for solitude and reflection.

My favorite route is where I met my wife

I have the most personal connection to Shoreline Trail in Mountain View, California. It’s where I really fell in love with running. It’s the place where I built up my routine, lost 100 pounds running and bicycling, and met my future wife, Cathy.

I always run with sunglasses

Ray Ban Predator prescription sun glasses. Over the last 8 years, rain or shine, they have never ever missed a run. (No, I don’t run at night).

My goal = BQ by 60 years old

I’ve got a couple of years to figure it out.

Coffee first

I almost always run in the morning before breakfast but after some coffee. However, I have to eat first before long runs – more than 10 miles. I’ve found running on an empty stomach is a much better running experience and that’s hard to do later in the day.
