Almost 1000 people attended the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals charity event on Sunday 8th september 2019,raising around £43,000 towards life saving equipment.
Runners had the choice whether to walk, jog or run the course. There where 3 distance categories of 2k, 5k and 10k. Those taking part wore bright blue shirts with the charities logo across the front, making it clear who was taking part allowing locals to cheer the runners on.
Music and stalls where available for those attending with a focus on a fun family day out. Young people could be seen enjoying playing tug of war and joining the many other activities laid on including the attendance of a fire appliance from the London fire brigade.
Karen Watts, from Team Gary told us why the event was so important to her:
“My son Gary was born with Aortic stenosis meaning he was a patient here from birth, he had heart surgery at 3 and 16 years old. Gary became unwell and required a transplant but was so unwell he couldn’t be considered for the surgery and sadly passed away. He always valued Harefields care and expertise, that’s why I took part”.
Karen also made an appeal for others to take part in future.
“Get involved, it’s a fun leisurely day out and you take the run at your own pace. It raises vital funds and allows you to meet like minded people who provide care to people like Gary. He would have had a much shorter life without Harefield!”
Winners of last year’s events were announced with the award for raising the most money going to Darren Whitney who raised £3,530.
The Royal Brompton and Harefield hospital charity are holding further events across the autumn with a skydive and the Great Brompton Bake Off which is taking place later this month.
