Community First Fox Cities Marathon Canceled – WBAY

FOX VALLEY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Community First Fox Cities Marathon (full and half) was canceled Sunday morning because of stormy weather that was a safety concern for runners. Lightning was a factor in the decision.

Thousands of people were preparing for the event. Some runners were disappointed but agreed that safety was more important.

Organizers said, “Out of safety concerns for all of our participants and volunteers, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Community First Fox Cities Marathon due to the pending weather. Please watch for more information directly from the marathon office. Stay dry and safe today.”

Action 2 News spoke to race organizers who said runners will need to find another race to qualify for major races like the Boston Marathon.

Participants will be able to earn their medal by running the distance they registered for by Oct. 10, 2019 and submitting their information on the Community First Fox Cities Marathon website.

All of the food that was meant for the event will now go to local food pantries, according to organizers.

The Community First Fox Cities Marathon organizers said the event will not be re-scheduled. The event has a no refund policy but said a $30 discount will be given for next year’s full, half, and relay marathon events which occur on Sunday of the Marathon race weekend.

Next year’s event will celebrate 30 years.

“We know and recognize how disappointed participants are for this year’s cancelled event but want to encourage them to come back for next year for our event,” Amanda Secor, spokesperson for Community First Fox Cities Marathon, said.

This comes just four months after the full Cellcom Green Bay Marathon was canceled due to flooding along the course over the Fox River trail.
