All-State Athletes: Here are the best fall high school athletes in RI – The Providence Journal

The Providence Journal has been honoring the best high school athletes across Rhode Island for more than 80 years, and that tradition continues this week as the Fall 2022 All-State teams, first and second, are revealed.

The daunting task of selecting the players on these teams falls to Journal sports writers Eric Rueb and Bill Koch, who have covered games and meets across the state, spoken with athletes and coaches, and researched countless stats to help determine the top athletes in each sport. The first-team athletes are all nominees for the Player of the Year award in their respective sport, which will be announced at the annual All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards show, which will be back with an exciting live event again in June.

The athletes were invited to The Journal’s offices on Fountain Street in Providence for a photo shoot, and the turnout for the fall season was the highest in recent memory, with more than 80 high school athletes attending one of the four photo sessions.

The All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, which is the largest high school sports recognition program in the country. Last year’s show in Providence featured former Classical High School and Providence College basketball star David Duke, who now plays for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. Past featured guests included former Red Sox stars Pedro Martinez and David Ortiz, former Celtic Paul Pierce and former Patriot Rob Gronkowski.

Rhode Island Girls Tennis Team

On Monday, the Girls Tennis teams were announced, and each day this week, another team will be published online, at providencejournal.com, and in the pages of The Providence Journal. This year’s Girls Tennis first team features a slew of new faces — such as South Kingstown’s freshman phenom Alexa Clark, the top player in Division II; Moses Brown’s Frances Aebker, who was an anchor in the No. 2 spot for the Quakers; and Mt. Hope’s Elsa White, who faced the best players in the state every match in D-I, among others.

Rhode Island Boys and Girls Cross Country teams

On Tuesday, the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams were unveiled, and two of the best distance runners Rhode Island has ever produced are featured on those squads — Moses Brown’s Sophia Gorriaran and St. Raphael’s Devan Kipyego, who both put together yet another standout season. But there are plenty of other top-notch athletes who made the cut.

On the girls’ side, there is Caroline Cummings, the Class A champion and who was just this week named the Gatorade RI Girls Cross Country runner of the year. Next fall, she will run at Georgetown University. On the boys’ side, Jackson Borge of North Kingstown ran to a second-place finish in the Class A Championships with a time of 16:02.5 and was even better at the state meet, running a 16:01.9.

Rhode Island Girls Soccer Team

On Wednesday, the Journal’s All-State Girls Soccer team was announced, and the state champion North Kingstown skippers had healthy representation on the first team. NK’s Ellie Bishop, Bella Cambio and Abigail Tober all found spots in the All-State lineup after their championship season. So did the state’s top goalie from the fall, Cranston West sophomore Oceanna Orlandi. And Pilgrim, which suffered the fewest regular-season losses in Division I, boasts two players on the first team — forward Amaya Coffie and defender Dasani Stewart.

Rhode Island Boys Soccer Team

The Boys Soccer All-State team was announced on Thursday, and it boasts players from across Rhode Island. Lincoln’s Oskar Caldarone was the best keeper in the state and he backstops this team of stars; South Kingstown’s Daniel Banks helped his Rebels win the Division I state title, beating rival North Kingstown — which features three Skippers. Tolman’s Darius Davis may be the top returning offensive threat in the state next season and Mount St. Charles’ Ian Goulet was an All-New England selection.

Rhode Island Girls Volleyball Team

On Friday, volleyball took its turn in the spotlight. North Kingstown claimed another championship last fall, and the Skippers boast three members of the All-State First Team — with Annie Draper, Mackenzie Lonergan and Ella Maack, who is expected to be back for another run at the top with NK next season. The team also features Gatorade Player of the Year Morgan Casey, of Portsmouth.

Rhode Island Field Hockey Team

Friday was also the release of the Field Hockey All-State teams. The fall season was chock full of great matchups, and in the end two of the sport’s powerhouses wound up in the championship match — with Moses Brown beating East Greenwich for the state title. Both the Quakers and Avengers have strong representation on our All-States team, with Moses Brown sending a total of seven players (incudling five freshmen and sophomores) — Kathryn Gauvin, Lily Procaccianti and Lila Stilley are on the first team, and four more Quakers made the second team.

Rhode Island football teams
