Well, it rained. A lot in a lot of places. But football also poured out some impressive performances Friday from its teams and players during a busy Week 7 of high school football.

Check out below as we go over the big wins, great performances, longest plays and some videos, photo galleries, scores and fan photos.

AN UPSET OR NOT?

At the surface, it was an upset that 4-3- Warren De La Salle defeated No. 6-ranked Davison, 22-0 (Davison is No. 18 in MLive’s Top 50).

But not when you look at the level of play for the Pilots, the defending Division 2 state champs. They have lost to the likes of Muskegon, Orchard Lake St. Mary and Birmingham Brother Rice – traditional powerhouses.

“All those games prepare us for games like this,” said quarterback Anthony Stepnitz.

AS FAR AS POSSIBLE

Saline had an easy time against Ann Arbor Skyline, but that doesn’t diminish what Larry Robinson II did.

The sophomore quarterback pulled off a rarity – a 99-yard touchdown run with 6:58 left in the first half and a 35-0 lead. The Hornets went on to 56-14.

You gotta eat, right? Even on a rainy night during a game. A ball ball for Walled Lake Western grabs a couple bites during Friday’s game against South Lyon.

BYRON CENTER CUT

Byron Center and quarterback Austin VanderMarkt put an exclamation point on their hold in the OK Green.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-0 and in first place in the conference as they dominated challenger Zeeland East (5-2) with a 49-7 victory.

As for Austin VanderMarkt, he had five touchdown run, from 68, 52, 16, 2 and 1 yard.

Oh, and they all came in the first half.

DISTANCE RUNNERS

This will make you tired just reading it. Check out some of these long touchdown plays.

-Can’t get much longer (well, except for Saline’s Larry Robinson noted above) as Hunter Knagg ran 98 yards for the TD for Fowlerville and a 21-7 lead over St. Johns in the first half.

-One play after recovering a fumble, Corunna’s Gabe Baumchen ran 95 yards for a touchdown against Owosso late in the first half.

-Saline got a 95-yard kick return for a TD from Kolton Malinczak and a 49-7 lead over Ann Arbor Skyline in the closing seconds of the first half.

–Clarence Roberts took off a 90-yard reverse for a TD and the first score against Morenci.

– Southfield A&T senior Jeremiah Piper dashed for a 66-yard TD run and a 20-0 lead over Oxford late in the first half.

– Loy Norrix got on the board against Portage Central as sophomore quarterback Tyler Roberts threw a 66-yard TD to Derell Mabon II.

– On the opening drive, Owosso got a 64-yard TD run by Colton Blaha against Corunna.

– Avery Goldensoph connected with Ethan Champney on a 64-yard TD and a 21-0 lead for Swan Valley over Freeland with 2:15 left in the first quarter.

-Birmingham Groves’ Damon Dunbar scored on a 63-yard TD run to tie the score at 7-7 against Rochester Hills Stoney Creek.

-Clinton opened the game against Whiteford with a 62-yard TD from Dylan Settles to Jack Voll.

-West Ottawa’s Max Voet scored on 60-yard run in the first quarter against Grandville.

–Ralph Donaldson had a 60-yard TD run to give Birmingham Groves a 22-14 lead over Stoney Creek.

Reign men

Essexville Garber’s football team liked the rain. It’s fans? Well, they were tolerant considering the result.

Rain that poured down late in Friday’s game against Standish-Sterling played right into the Dukes’ style of play for the final 7:39.

The defense got a stop and the offense went to the ground, led by 6-foot-2, 265-pound Alex VanSumeren who carried seven times to hold onto the ball the rest of the way.

“When the rain came, our guys were out there jumping up and down and dancing,” Garber coach Jake Coquillard said. “They were enjoying it.”

GOOD FOOTWORK

Gotta give some love to the kickers. Here are a couple impressive ones we came across:

-Fenton’s Braden Moore drilled a 50-yarder to put the Tigers up 20-0 over Flushing late in the third quarter.

–Easton Goldensoph kicked a 31-yard field goal with 4.4 seconds left in first half to give Swan Valley a 31-0 lead.

–Lance Fogelberg 31 yard field goal puts Stoney Creek in front of Birmingham Groves 23-22 with 10:50 remaining

– Warren De La Salle senior Daniel Heppler had field goals of 32 and 39 yards in the upset over Davison.

AN EXTRA KICK

Speaking of kickers, Paw Paw’s Claudia Muessig has an interesting story, as told by MLive’s Patrick Nothaft.

She is the team’s kicker, after playing soccer, and Friday she delivered on all five PATS and was a part of the Homecoming court and the team won 35-6 over Vicksburg.
