Thousands of runners ran the 41st Annual Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018. Detroit Free Press, Detroit Free Press

Each week, the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon chooses a runner to spotlight as the New Balance Runner of the Week. Whether you’re training for a full marathon, going out on the weekend for a long run or getting back into the swing of running, the race loves to showcase its runners.

The marathon is proud to partner with the following sponsors: New Balance, the Official footwear and apparel sponsor of the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon. The Stick, a self-massage tool helping runners recover since 1988, will be sending each winner a Sprinter Stick.

How long you’ve been running: 10 years

Your running story, and if you feel comfortable, your latest PR or race times: I started running about 10 years ago in my late 50s when my daughter asked me to run with her. Started out slowly around the block and then increased the distance. Did a couple of 5Ks then moved up to half marathons. Most of my runs have been with my daughter. It is always fun to get out there in the corral together and start the run. I have completed half marathons in Detroit, Mt. Clemens, Traverse City and Disney World. My favorite 5K is the MIU Run for the Ribbon at the Detroit Zoo on Fathers Day benefiting Prostate Cancer, which I am a survivor of. I also participated in two Mackinaw Bridge runs on Labor Day.

How many miles you run per week: Father time and health have caught up with me over the last couple of years as I have not completely recovered from back surgery.  As I start to gear back up I am getting about 5 miles a week in.

Favorite running song: I use Run Keeper and have the same playlist for every run that starts with a Bob Seger song followed by lots of Aerosmith.

Favorite post-run snack: Favorite post-race snack is chocolate milk, but also love that Moomers ice cream after the Bayshore run in Traverse City.

Best piece of training advice: Best piece of running advice is just get out there. I started late in life, one foot in front of the other and before you know it I was able to accomplish my goal. If you can’t keep running, get to the side, but keep moving, catch that breath and try it again.

Are you planning on running in any Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank events in 2019?: I will run the 2019 Detroit International half marathon in October with my daughter. It will be our ninth year (though I did miss two of the years due to health issues). When I could not run, I was down there as my daughter’s cheering team. It is so cool to be running on the apex of the Ambassador Bridge at daybreak.
