Left-hander Brett Anderson is the latest addition to the quickly transforming Milwaukee Brewers, agreeing Friday to a $5 million, one-year contract.

The 31-year-old left-hander from Stillwater was 13-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 31 starts with Oakland last season, when he had a $1.5 million base salary and earned $1 million in performance bonuses based on starts.

Anderson has been hurt throughout his 11-year big league career. Anderson had back surgery for a herniated disk at the end of the 2014 season and again in 2016 for a bulging disk. He had Tommy John surgery in 2011 and has missed time with an oblique strain and broken finger.

METS: Completed a $3 million, one-year contract Friday with former right-hander Michael Wacha of St. Louis that includes $8 million in performance bonuses.

ASTROS: Agreed to a $4.1 million contract with right-hander Lance McCullers, the same salary he had last season while he recovered from Tommy John surgery.

RAYS: Working to finalize a two-year contract worth about $12 million with Japanese slugger Yoshitomo Tsutsugo.

RANGERS: Completed a $16 million, two-year contract with free agent right-hander Jordan Lyles.

Americans trail at the Presidents Cup

The Americans are in a big hole at the Presidents Cup, and there’s nothing Tiger Woods is doing about it.

Whatever momentum they had going into the double session Saturday at Australia’s Royal Melbourne vanished as Abraham Ancer and the International team filled the scoreboards with their black-and-gold colors and built a 9-5 lead after three sessions.

Tony Finau birdied the last two holes to at least get a half-point from the final fourballs match for the U.S. team.

Woods, the first playing captain in 25 years and a winner in the two matches he played with Justin Thomas, took himself out of the lineup on Saturday morning for fourballs. And then in a surprise, he sat himself in the afternoon.

QBE SHOOTOUT: Harold Varner III and Ryan Palmer shot a 17-under 55 on Friday to match the scramble record since the event moved to Tiburon Golf Club in 2001.

Varner and Palmer eagled the par-5 17th and had 15 birdies and two pars in the first round. They tied the scramble record set by Greg Norman and Steve Elkington in 2005 and matched by Jason Day and Cameron Tringale in 2014.

Nebraska guard suspended from team

Nebraska guard Jervay Green has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, coach Fred Hoiberg announced Friday.

Green started the Cornhuskers’ first nine games and is averaging 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Former Olympic champion dies

Three-time Olympic champion and world mile record-holder Peter Snell has died in Dallas. He was aged 80.

Snell, who is regarded as one of the greatest middle-distance runners, won the 800 meters at the 1960 Rome Olympics aged 21, and the 800-1,500 double at the 1964 Tokyo Games.

He was the first man since 1920 to win the 800 and 1,500 at the same Olympics. No male athlete has done so since.

Cardinals release veteran linebacker

The Arizona Cardinals have released veteran linebacker Terrell Suggs with three games remaining in a disappointing season for both the player and the team.

The 37-year-old Suggs had some good moments for the Cardinals early in the year but his production diminished in recent weeks. He’s played in all 13 games and has 35 tackles, including eight for a loss and 5 1/2 sacks.

SAINTS: Former Pro Bowl linebacker Vaughan Johnson, who was a member of the club’s vaunted “Dome Patrol” linebacker corps, has died at age 57.

DOLPHINS: Signed DeVante Parker to a five-year contract that could be up to $40 million, including incentives and bonuses.
