Former Eureka runner collects sash at Cricket Willow  Ballarat Courier

news, latest-news,

Anna Kasapis turned back the clock in winning the open 800m at the Daylesford Gift meet at Cricket Willow on Sunday. Kasapis showed that despite being out of athletics for an extended time while she had a family, she still has what it takes to get the job done on the track. This was only her second outing of the season and third since joining the Victorian Athletic League circuit last season in the second phase of her running career. Kapasis, competing under maiden name Worland, was one Victoria’s best middle distance runners for more than a decade from the late 1990s – running as a Eureka Athletic Club member while attending Federation University in Ballarat and continuing to wear the club colours beyond that period. She won state under-20 and open 800m and 1500m titles. Her honour roll also features being a two-time Victorian women’s mile champion. Kasapis from Westmeadows said she had initially returned to athletics with the ambition of competing in the World Masters Games in Perth in 2016. She not only successfully made it to the games, she won gold in her category in the 1500m. Kasapis ran off 126m in Sunday’s final after taking out her heat. Using a strong kick over the last 200m, she had 2.5 seconds to spare from Julian Harris (100m) and Tom Hecimovic (130m) on the line as the three frontmarkers had the race to themselves.
