Johnson City Press: Bucs score two wins on final day of ETSU Invitational

ETSU distance runner Ben Varghese crosses the finish line to win the men's 1-mile race.
ETSU pole vaulter Natalie Newsome clears the bar.

Junior Ben Varghese, a former Daniel Boone standout, ran a 4:18.18 in Saturday’s men’s 1-mile race to prevail by more than 10 seconds. The women’s 4,000-meter distance relay team of Heather Feuchtenberger, Julia Karsten, Genevieve Schwarz and Lindsey Stallworth also left the competition in the dust, winning their race by over a minute.

Overall, the Bucs scored three individual victories with Feuchtenberger capturing the women’s 800-meter race on Friday.

“Yesterday Heather opened up with a nice win and followed it up with a lead-off leg on the DMR,” ETSU coach George Watts said. “It was great to have Lindsey back out and she did a great job of anchoring the team. Sometimes it’s tough to run out front, but I thought Julia and Genevieve did a nice job of keeping a nice gap on the other teams.”

Other running highlights from the second day included Kennedie Carithers besting her time at 58.16 seconds in the 400-meter dash to finish third. Neyasha Honorable finished fourth (7.83) in the 60-meter sprint.

Kennedi Johnson, Kendra Whitehurst and Khiara White were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in the women’s 60-meter hurdles. On the men’s side, Gavin Cooper raced to a fifth-place finish (8:57) in the 3,000 meters.

Mekayla Brown set a new personal record of 19 feet and four inches in the women’s long jump to finish third. White was seventh before competing in the hurdles.

Jaden Finch finished fifth in the shot put at 41 feet and 9 3/4 inches after she finished fifth in the weight throw the previous day.

Milligan College had nine runners achieve Appalachian Athletic Conference qualifying times during the two-day meet.

Hannah Bell finished fifth in the women’s 3,000 at 10:47, while Ali Burns was 11th at 11:26. Cory Aulich ran 9:19 to qualify on the men’s side.

Five Milligan runners finished in the top nine in the women’s 1-mile. Third-place performer Bekah Owen had a p.r. of 5:19, while Gabrielle Mardis was fifth at 5:24.

Avery DeWolf was sixth, followed by Caitlin Dominy in eighth and Maci Cloninger in ninth.

Mitch Bronstetter, another former Daniel Boone High School standout, finished fifth (4:31) in the men’s 1-mile race.

“Bekah, Gabby and Avery really stand out for their mile efforts this morning, and I think Hannah and Ali also ran well in their 3k,” Milligan coach Chris Layne said. “Mitch picked up a solid heat win in the mile, and I thought our 3k guys got a lot out of their races today.”
