TUMON, Guam—Guam Sports Events, Inc., organizers of the United Airlines Guam Marathon, presented the event’s beneficiaries—the Guam Police Department and the Guam Fire Department—a donation of lifesaving equipment and supplies for their continuous support of the event.

GPD and GFD have been strong supporters of UGM since its inception almost eight years ago. The donated supplies included utility belts, emergency kits, and tourniquets. In addition to the in-kind donation, to GPD and GFD, UGM also gives back to the community through a monetary donation to USO Guam.

Ben Ferguson, UGM event director, said, “UGM is proud to contribute to these great organizations, and we do this on behalf of the thousands of participants of the United Airlines Guam Marathon and its key sponsors. The donations, which include monetary and in-kind donations was made possible by the number of participants and the support of the community. We look forward to a continued partnership with GPD and GFD in hosting another safe and successful world class running event.”

GPD police chief Stephen Ignacio said “The UGM event is good for Guam, because it helps support sports tourism. For GPD, we want to be part of ensuring the event is safe for all runners and our community. The equipment received today will be used for

the Highway Patrol Division, and this upgrades our police gear that doesn’t need to be spent out of pocket.”

Gold sponsor GVB president and CEO Pilar Laguana shared, during the presentation, “We are so grateful to each of the officers in uniform who have helped to make this annual event an extremely successful and safe event. From the Guam Visitors Bureau and the team involved, we are truly blessed to have your partnership. GVB will continue to do our part in promoting this event to our overseas markets. We hope through our efforts that we continue to welcome more visitors to our island for this wonderful experience and also surpass last year’s registration numbers.”

GPD received 14 sets of utility belts that include:
• Handcuff case
• Radio holder
• Flashlight holder
• Double magazine case
• Baton Holder

GFD received emergency kits that include:
• Tourniquet sets
• Bigeasy glo easy wedge kits
• Elite first aid tactical trauma kits
• DYNA med medic back pack first responder kits
• Maxpedition pouch for responders’ supplies

“This donation is a great investment for the GFD. It promotes tremendous saving for us and will allow us to treat and provide better emergency care for the general public,” said Battalion Chief Roderick Meno of GFD’s Search and Rescue Operations. “Some of these kits will also help with medical illnesses, injuries and the lock out kit provides us the necessary tools to mitigate emergencies with minimal damage when children are locked in a vehicle.”

UGM is scheduled for April 5, 2020 at the Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park (Ypao Beach) in Tumon. Registration is ongoing for the four race distances – 5K, 10K, half marathon (13.1 miles) and marathon (26.2 miles). More than1,400 runners have already registered for the event. Event organizers encourage runners to register online at unitedairlinesguammarathon.com.

Ferguson added, “The men and women of the Guam Fire Department and the Guam Police department are great supporters of the UGM. We count on them to ensure the safety of our runners and the community at large. We couldn’t do the event without them and thank them for their significant role in the quality of life that we all enjoy on Guam.”
