MOST New Year’s resolutions tend to revolve around improving or maintaining fitness, whether that be by trying something new or relighting your fitness fire.
But for Jemma Brock from Oakdale, running has always been a big part of her life, and 2020 will only see it get bigger.
This year, Jemma has decided to run 12 marathons in one year to raise money for local charity Help and Care.
Help and Care is an independent, local charity that works with people and communities by offering a holistic range of services and activities aimed at maintaining independence and quality of life.
After losing interest in running at the age of 21, Jemma decided to give it another go in October 2015.
She said: “I have always enjoyed it, but I used to get bored running alone. I had no awareness of local running groups when I was younger as Facebook wasn’t around then.”
2018 saw Jemma struggle with her mental health which then led her to the decision to run 12 marathons in one year.
Jemma explained her challenging idea: “I knew running would help with my mental health and that setting a goal would give me something to focus on.”
Joining the Oakdale Runners, a relaxed running group with 800 members, has helped Jemma train and improve her running skills in preparation for her upcoming marathons, as well as make her feel part of a team.
Jemma has competed in multiple events over the years, varying from marathons to doing local Parkruns with her friend.
However, she has never undertaken a challenge as gruelling as her upcoming 12 marathons in 2020.
In May, Jemma has two marathons in the space of two days, so maintaining training motivation is key.
Jemma said: “I really enjoy running long-distance as it’s good thinking time for me. But training is very hard, you have to be very dedicated. It’s difficult to keep motivated in the winter.”
Jemma will be taking part in the following marathons this year: London Marathon, Ox Frolic, Moreton Marathon, Unicorn Frolic, Hellstone Marathon, Goodwood, Cider Sessions, Cider Frolic, Bath Two Tunnels and the New Forest Marathon.
For those who are hesitant to start running or take part in running events, Jemma advised to just do it.
She said: “I push myself and don’t always succeed, but you will never know unless you try.”
Jemma hopes to raise £2000-£3000 for Help and Care over the course of the year.
