Earlier this month, organisers of the Belfast City Marathon apologised, after admitting the course for the 2019 race, which took place on Sunday 5 May 2019, was too long.
Belfast City Marathon chairman David Seaton said it was a “human error” mistake that led to an extra 0.3 miles being added on to the end of the route.
In a statement, Seaton said “approximately 460 additional metres were added to the officially measured course of 26.2 miles.”
“This was due to human error, with the lead car diverting from the official route.”
However, it has now been revealed that the course was even longer than expected. In a statement, organisers confirmed, “It has been determined from measuring the route taken by marathon runners on Sunday 5th May, that the 2019 marathon course was 544 metres too long, not 460 metres as originally stated.”
The statement goes on to reassure the 18,000 runners who took part in the race that their times have been adjusted to reflect this error, and that they can now see their new time on the race results website.
