RUNNING: Elwha Bridge Run a smash success with PA’s Larson, PT’s Mauro winning races  Peninsula Daily News

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School junior long-distance runner Lauren Larson cruised to victory in the women’s 10-kilometer race in The Elwha Bridge Run on Saturday, winning with a time of 38 minutes, 4 seconds.

Larson has recorded three top-10 finishes at the Class 2A State Cross Country Championships in her high school career, finishing fifth last November.

Port Townsend runner John Mauro turned in the fastest overall time to win the men’s 10K race in 36:09, an average of 5:50 per mile.

Sequim Middle School eighth grader Colby Ellefson turned in the top time in the men’s 5K in 18:46. Silverdale’s Paetyn Price claimed the women’s 5K with a time of 21:58.

A total of 635 participants took part in Saturday’s race held along the Olympic Discovery Trail just west of Port Angeles, according to race director Victoria Jones.

The Elwha Bridge Run, sponsored by the Peninsula Daily News and the Sequim Gazette and presented by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, is part of a five-race series put together by the Port Angeles Marathon Association, which also manages the North Olympic Discovery Marathon.

Runners traveled from all over the Pacific Northwest for this event.

An additional 452 virtual racers pledging to run the race have registered through Sunday. The virtual race is still open for registration.

The second of five races in the Run the Peninsula series is the Railroad Bridge 5K / 10K in Sequim,WA on April 25.

Other races in the series include the North Olympic Discovery Marathon from Blyn to Port Angeles on June 7, the Larry Scott Trail Run with half-marathon, 5K and 10K courses in Port Townsend on Oct. 17 and the Jamestown S’Klallam 5K/10K on Dec. 5 in Blyn.
