On March 13, the Moore High School track team in Moore, Oklahoma, will hold its first meet since six members of the track team were hit by a car, killing three and injuring three. To honor the victims and their families, the team and the school are calling on the running community to join through virtual runs across the world.
Twelve students were about to finish track practice with a 10-minute cool-down run around the neighborhood when a driver reportedly hopped the curb and struck six of them. Three students, senior Rachel Freeman, sophomore Yuridia Martinez, and senior Kolby Crum, were killed. Three other students—senior Joseph White, junior Shiloh Hutchinson, and sophomore Ashton Baza—were injured.
“It’s been a difficult journey that we’ve been on, and we’ll have to take this journey for a while,” head track coach at Moore Stefan Seifried told Runner’s World. “These students are going to be dearly missed, and we are going to run for them. The seasons ahead will be dedicated to them and we want to do all we can to honor their memories.”
Members of local, national, and international running communities reached out in the wake of the incident, and the school and the families of the victims received letters and donations from all over the world. (You can find the page for the Martinez family , for the Crum family , and for the school’s alumni association, which set up a memorial fund for the victims and their families, .)
After the crash, the Moore Lions cancelled the remainder of their indoor track season. The team is planning to return on March 13 with a home meet that was already scheduled to kick off the outdoor season.
Because of the outreach from the running community, the Moore High School Alumni Association is asking that groups, clubs, and crews take part in 10-minute runs—the same amount of time the team was going to run before they were hit—on March 12 or 13 to honor the victims and the Moore community.
The Alumni Association is asking anyone who holds a virtual run to take a picture and post it on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram using the hashtag #10MooreMinutes. They also ask that runners release three blue balloons for the survivors, three white balloons for the students who were killed, and three red balloons for the Moore cross country and track teams. A moment of silence is also appreciated.
In addition, shirts are being sold with all proceeds from sales being donated to the scholarship fund that was created in honor of those affected by the tragedy.
