SOMERS, N.Y. – Matt Reimann is a senior co-captain for the winter track team. He competes in the 3,200 meter (2 miles), 1,600 meter (1 mile), and relay races, including the 4×800.
His 2-mile personal record is 10 minutes and 1 second and his 1-mile personal record is 4 minutes and 45 seconds. Reimann and the 4×800 relay team recently recorded a time of 8 minutes and 22 seconds. The Somers distance team, of which Reimann is a member, also finished second place at the cross-country sectionals.
How old were you when you started running and what got you started?
I started in seventh grade in the modified track program at Somers Middle School. I started purely to get and stay in shape; however, I quickly grew to love the sport and the team.
What is your favorite thing about being on the Somers track team?
The family spirit that we all share with each other. We act as a family and each of us want to bring our best to the table. When we get on the line, whether it’s in the Armory or on the cross-country field, we run as a family.
What are your individual and team goals for the rest of the season?
My individual goals are to achieve a personal record in the two mile and mile. As a team we have many aspirations, but our main goal is to win Leagues and send as many athletes as possible to State Quals.
What is your favorite track event?
My favorite track event is the 3,200-meter run.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
I had the privilege of running alongside many great runners throughout my high school experience. On our team we have a great mentor program that not only helps athletes flourish but helps our team dynamics grow. For most of the distance team, myself included, we look up to Matt and Greg Fusco as they were not only gifted runners, but also hard workers and great friends.
As a captain, how do you view your role as a leader?
I must lead by example. Whether I am tired, sore or am recovering from an injury, I need to keep going. Running is not always easy so it takes a great leader, who does all the little things to serve not just as a captain, but a role model as well.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?
I plan on studying political science on a pre-law track. I intend to become a criminal justice attorney. The main reason I want this career is because I believe in our legal system. I want to pursue fairness and justice and most of all; give more than I receive.
What music do you listen to before a meet?
Personally, I like a little bit of everything. I have a perpetually changing track playlist that I listen to, and the bus ride always has a speaker with the best, funniest, and most motivational music.
Do you have any favorite pre- or post-game rituals you share with your teammates?
For the bigger meets we come together the night before, whether at the high school or someone’s house, and eat together, plan for tomorrow, and hang out. It feels like a family dinner, while also feeling like we are about to go to war. Post-game rituals involve going out to diners late at night to celebrate a personal record and team victory.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
The one power any runner wishes they could have is incredible speed. While we train day in and day out, we all wish we could just be born like “The Flash.”
What is something about yourself people would be surprised to learn?
One thing many people do not know about me is that I used to be very shy. Starting as a ninth grader, I was very quiet and kept to my close group of friends. Thanks to track, my confidence and friend group has grown exponentially.
What is your favorite place to visit on vacation and why?
My favorite trip I have ever went on was to Italy. I loved the cultural sites, learning about Italian culture, and of course the food.
What is your favorite place to eat locally?
This is a tough choice for me, but I would have to say my favorite place to eat is Super Deli.
What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?
The go-to app on my phone is Snapchat. Snapchat is a fun way to talk to my friends and share photos.
For a young athlete growing up in the Somers school district, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the track team and why should they go out for the team?
I would tell anyone considering joining track that you are not just joining a team, but a family. Running is not always the easiest or most fun thing to do; however, the rush you get when the gun goes off, and the adrenaline you experience when you cross the finish line is priceless. Track is a lot of hard work and takes dedication, but it is also a great sport, with great people, and great coaches.
