This year’s Belmont Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be a family affair.
Alex Renfroe (pictured) and Brandi Miller-Renfroe were standouts for the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams more than a decade ago and later married. They will enter the Hall of Fame together, though, as each was named a member of the Class of 2019, which was revealed late Friday afternoon.
In addition to those two, a pair of long distance runners and a long-time administrator will take their places among the Bruins greats. All five were unanimous selections of the school’s Hall of Fame committee.
Additionally, the 2003-04 men’s basketball team was a Legendary Team, the fifth in the history of the Hall, and former Belmont baseball player and current Nashville lawyer Gary Temple was named the 2019 recipient of the Chaney Memorial Award, which honors an individual for significant contributions to the athletics department.
Formal induction ceremonies will be Sept. 19 at the Maddox Grand Atrium of the Curb Event Center. Admission is $25 per person. To purchase tickets or for more information, email BUAthleticHallofFame@belmont.edu.
The 2019 Belmont Athletic Hall of Fame Class:
- Kipkosgei Magut, cross country/track and field: A five-time conference champion in track, he was the Atlantic Sun Conference Runner of the Year and the most outstanding performer at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships in 2006 and 2007.
- Brandi Miller-Renfroe, basketball: One of nine players in Atlantic Sun Conference history with at least 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, she is a two-time first-team All-A-Sun selection. She is sixth in conference history with 419 career field goals made and led the Bruins to the 2004 conference championship.
- Alex Renfroe, basketball: He was the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American in 2009, when he became the first Division I player in 12 years to lead his team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots. He holds the Curb Event Center single game scoring record and had 15 points in the program’s 2008 NCAA Tournament loss to Duke.
- Brittany Thune-Lindberg, cross country/track and field: A two-time Atlantic Sun cross country Runner of the Year, she won two conference titles in cross country and two more in outdoor track. She was a first-team All A-Sun selection in cross country all four years she competed and was a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier.
- Debbie Chenoweth, administration: Filled numerous roles during a 43-year career in Belmont’s athletics department, the last of which was as director of basketball operations. She also served in administrative roles with the athletics director, the marketing department and the Bruin Club. Chenoweth is the third non-student-athlete or coach named to the Belmont’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Legendary Team
- 2003-04 Men’s Basketball: Earned the program’s first victory over an NCAA Division I top 25 opponent when it topped Missouri 71-67 on Dec. 30, 2003. The team finished 21-9 and earned an at-large invitation to the Postseason NIT, the program’s first postseason appearance as an NCAA program. Six members of the squad eventually were part of the 2006 NCAA Tournament team.
Chaney Memorial Award
- Gary Temple: A Bruin Club member since 1992, he was a four-year letter-winner on Belmont’s baseball team before he embarked on a successful law career. He has been a long-time supporter of the baseball program and a 15-year men’s basketball season ticket holder.
