Each week, the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon chooses a runner to spotlight as the New Balance Runner of the Week. Whether you’re training for a full marathon, going out on the weekend for a long run or getting back into the swing of running, the race loves to showcase its runners.
The marathon is proud to partner with the following sponsors: New Balance, the Official footwear and apparel sponsor of the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon. The Stick, a self-massage tool helping runners recover since 1988, will be sending each winner a Sprinter Stick.

Jennifer Ohlsson
Location: Lake Orion.
Age: 18.
How long you’ve been running: Five years.
Your running story: I started running track in seventh grade when my brother and best friend convinced me to. I always wanted to prove myself to my coaches and that’s what drove me to get better back then. After starting cross-country in eighth grade, I was completely hooked on distance running and it became my favorite thing to do. As I’ve gone through high school (at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep), my love for running has only increased, even when I’ve battled injuries and tough times. I ran three PRs at the AAU Junior Olympics this month: a 4:48 in the 1,500-meters; a 7:18 in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, and a 10:37 in the 3,000. My fastest cross-country time is a 18:18 for a 5K distance.
How many miles you run per week: About 50.
Favorite running song: “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” by Dropkick Murphys.
Favorite post-run snack: Power Crunch Triple Chocolate protein bar.
Best piece of training advice: Remember to do hip mobility and other strength exercises – every single time I run I go through my strength and mobility routine and it keeps me from getting injured.
Are you planning on running in any Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank events in 2019? I’ll be busy with my senior school seasons, so I will not be running those.
