Eilish McColgan withdraws from London Marathon Runner’s World
Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion Eilish McColgan has pulled out of London Marathon because of ‘unexpected issues’ with her blood sugar levels.
The Scottish triple Olympian announced on Twitter this morning she was withdrawing from the race.
The 31-year-old, who won gold in Birmingham last month, says she has been having fueling issues on her long practice runs and ‘sadly there isn’t enough time to get it right for race day.’
She described having dizzy spells on long runs and being unable to get her fuelling right. The issue has now been identified as rebound hypoglycemia, which can affect endurance athletes and lead to reduced blood sugar levels.
McColgan is now hoping to make her London Marathon debut in April 2023 when the race moves back to its normal calendar slot.
‘It’s not a goodbye,’ she wrote on Twitter. ‘It’s an “I’ll see you later”. I feel confident that the extra six months will give me the time I need to prepare my body and fuelling strategy.”
Her next focus is racing in The Big Half in London on Sunday.
McColgan has had an outstanding season collecting a 10,000m silver medal at the European Championships in Munich, following her Commonwealth gold.
McColgan’s mother Liz won the London Marathon in 1996 in a time of 2:27:54. She raced her personal best time the following year in 2:26:52.
The next London Marathon takes place on Sunday, 2 October.
