Geoffrey Kamworor set a new half marathon world record today in Copenhagen, crossing the finish line in an incredible 58 minutes and 1 second. The 26-year-old Kenyan runners time, which is subject to ratification, puts him 17 seconds faster than the previous record, set by Abraham Kiptum in Valencia last year.
This was Kamworor’s first 13.1 mile race in over five years. According to the race website, Kamworor’s splits were as follows:
Posting on Instagram this afternoon, Kamworor wrote “This record was in my mind for a long time, I’m so happy to have made it reality today.”
Fellow Kenyan, Eliud Kipchoge shared his own congratulations to the runner, writing “A huge congratulations to @geoffreykamworor! We’re all proud to see you run this world record. Great planning, preparations, teammates, coaching and management is equal to record breaking.”
Kamworor’s next race will be the TCS New York City marathon on 3 November 2019, where he will hope to regain his 2017 title.
