The state of Iowa has long embraced its track-and-field scene. The 2019 season was no different.
From riveting performances at the Drake Relays to state-title celebrations on the Blue Oval, this track campaign highlighted some of the state’s top athletes.
With that, here is the Des Moines Register’s 2019 All-Iowa girls’ track-and-field team. High school sports writers at the Des Moines Register and Iowa City Press-Citizen chose the all-class and Elite team.
The Elite team consists of two sprinters, two middle-distance runners, two distance runners, two throwers, two hurdlers and two jumpers, while selecting from all four classes.
The All-Iowa track-and-field teams will be honored June 21, 2019, at the Des Moines Register Sports Awards, featuring Kurt Warner as the celebrity guest, on June 21 at Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines. All honorees are invited to the event free of charge.

All-Iowa Elite Team
Sprints: Kerris Roberts, sr., Waterloo East
It was a redemption season for the Waterloo East standout and Purdue signee. After hamstring injuries derailed her junior year, Roberts bounced back with titles in the 4A 100-meter and 200-meter races, as well as a Drake Relays 100-meter title.
Sprints: Carly King, sr., Davenport Assumption
The Duke signee took home another 3A 400-meter crown and added titles in in the sprint medley and 100 meters. King also finished second in the 200. She ends her prep career with 15 state medals, six of those titles.
Middle distance: Allison Bookin-Nosbisch, jr., Ottumwa
Bookin-Nosbisch’s 4A 800-meter title was the first in Ottumwa track-and-field history. She won in 2:11.45, the fastest 800 time at the state meet across all classes.
Middle distance: Janette Schraft, sr., Glenwood
The Iowa State signee was a one-woman wrecking crew at the state meet. She captured 3A titles in the 800, 1,500, 3,000 and 400 hurdles. Those performances alone accounted for 40 of Glenwood’s meet-winning 65 points.
Distance: Marie Hostetler, jr., Mid-Prairie
It’s hard to believe there’s still another year of Hostetler dominance ahead. Marie smoothly took the reins from her older sister Anna, winning the 2A 1,500 and 3,000 while finishing second in the 800. Hostetler helped guide Mid-Prairie to its second straight title.
Distance: Ashlyn Keeney, fr., Iowa City Liberty
Freshmen don’t crack the Elite team often, but Keeney was just that dominant. She cruised to 4A titles in the 1,500 and 3,000, as well as a Drake Relays title in the 3,000. Keeney’s name will be around for a while.
Hurdles: Caroline Schaeckenbach, jr., Iowa City High
After finishing second in the Drake Relays 400 hurdles, Schaeckenbach bounced back with a 4A title in the event. Her winning time of 1:03.37 was the fastest at the state meet across all classes.
Hurdles: Darby Thomas, sr., C.B. Abraham Lincoln
Thomas’ versatility could put her in multiple places on this team, but we’ll go with hurdles after she ended her high school career in fine fashion. Thomas, a Nebraska signee, PR’d in the 4A 100 hurdles for her fourth-career state championship. Thomas also has three long jump titles.
Jumps: Miracle Ailes, soph., Keokuk
In clinching the first girls’ track state title in Keokuk history, Ailes cleared 5-07 to win the 4A high jump. She also won the event at the Drake Relays.
Jumps: Aliyah Carter, jr., Dubuque Wahlert
The Kansas State volleyball commit can do a little leaping too. Her winning jump (18-08.50) set a new 3A state-meet record. Her mark was second furthest across all classes, only to Thomas.
Throws: Jamie Kofron, sr., Tipton
After sweeping the Drake Relays throws titles for a second straight season, the Iowa signee won the 2A discus and finished second in the 2A shot put. Kofron won the discus crown on her final throw.
Throws: Brylie Zeisneiss, sr., South Hardin
The Arizona signee added to her two runner-up titles at the Drake Relays with a championship in the 2A shot put. Zeisneiss also finished second in the 2A discus.
