MOOSIC – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell behind the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs by seven runs before staging a furious comeback attempt that came up short in a 11-8 loss at PNC Field on Saturday night.
The IronPigs jumped out to a 7-0 lead with four runs in the third and three runs in the sixth.
Phil Gosselin and Deivy Grullon each hit home runs int he third. Gosselin eighth of the season came with two runners on while Grullon’s 14th of the year was a solo shot.
Gosuke Katoh got the RailRiders to within 7-3 with a three-run blast of his own in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was his eighth home run of the season.
However, the IronPigs put up four runs in the eight to take an 11-3 lead.
Mandy Alvarez got the RailRiders to within 11-6 with a three run home run in the bottom of the eighth, and Tyler Wade delivered a two-run single to close out the scoring in the ninth inning.
JoJo Romero (3-2) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing just two runs – both earned – on six hits, three walks and a strike out. Ed Garci recorded the games final out to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Koerner (4-2) was tagged with the loss. He gave up seven runs – five earned – on nine hits a walk and two strikeouts.
The RailRiders closeout the three-game series against Lehigh Valley with a game starting at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
