About this time of year, I find my interest in gardening waning a bit. For one thing, it’s hot. For another, it’s already September and the first frost may not be far off, so why bother. In years past, I reminded people to expect the first frost around September 15 in most areas.
Nevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will make stops in Reno and Carson City this week. Mammography screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however, screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 that have a screening referral from a provider.
A 65-year-old transient man was arrested in the 1200 block of N. Carson Street Friday night for alleged possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a contempt of court warrant.
The Walker Fire burning in northern California’s Plumas County has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a dense smoke advisory for portions of northern and western Nevada, through 11 p.m. Sunday.
The advisory is for Lassen and Eastern Plumas counties, Eastern Sierra County, northern Washoe County, the Greater Reno area as well as Carson City and Carson Valley in Douglas County.

There was a fatal crash involving a single motorcycle on Highway 50 West Spooner on Saturday night, one mile above the junction of Highway 395 near the Carson City, Douglas County line.
At least one person is dead following a fiery blaze in South Lake Tahoe following a multiple vehicle crash in South Tahoe which sent massive plumes of black smoke into the air.
The Sierra Lutheran Falcons are off to a solid start on the season, with a pair of wins from the girls varsity and junior varsity volleyball squads and a first place finish from the girls golf team.
Sierra Lutheran’s JV volleyball team won its first non-conference matchup against Mineral County on Friday. The Hawks won both sets 25-18 and 25-20.
Over sixty volunteers showed up early Saturday morning to help Gabe Crossman, a 17-year-old senior at Carson High School and member of Troop 45, restore the “C” on C-Hill for his Eagle Scout and Senior Projects.

Laps for Lungs fundraiser at Carson City BMX Track (1555 Livermore Lane, Carson City) will take place Friday September 13th, 2019 from 6 – 7:30pm. There is a $5.00 donation asked for the fundraiser. (Regular Racing Fees apply for the night).
For each lap you ride during practice, a ticket will be placed into a jar for the drawing. The more laps you ride the more chances to win!

A Carson City woman was arrested by Carson City deputies Thursday afternoon after allegedly attempting to steal $80,000 from her ex-employer, according to the arrest report.
Helen Donner Kelly was arrested after deputies were contacted by the accountant of the business who reported that they had received a call from the bank advising that Kelly had entered the bank that day and requested to close the current business account for the employer and have the funds transferred into her personal account.
Thursday provided the Carson High School cross country team with a good look at the rest of the Sierra League and a little change of pace Thursday afternoon in Washoe Valley.

In wake of the recent studies conducted by Desert Research Institute and UC Davis finding microplastics in Lake Tahoe, local 501(c)(3), “Clean up the Lake” in partnership with Tahoe Dive Center, have decided to speed up their announcement of their pre-existing plan to do a 72-mile underwater-scuba trash clean up of the entire shoreline of Lake Tahoe in Nevada and California.

Carson City is a very special place and, as the city continues to grow and prosper, many are looking to relocate here for a myriad of reasons.
Through the years, Carson City has changed. There have been good times and there have been times that, as Thomas Paine wrote, “have tried men’s souls.” We’ve lost some historic and iconic structures but have bounced back in the good times. The biggest recent changes occurred in 2016 with the reimagining of the downtown core that continues today.
Join our 150 member-plus artists organization Nevada Artists Association and show in our Autumn Members Show. Show change is 9/7 from 10am to 1pm. The Autumn show runs from 9/8 to 10/18. Hang around for the wine walk noon to 4pm, and then an artist’s reception featuring LaVonne Tulip Vasik and Dana Childs.
When the families and friends of Lyfe Recovery clients were introduced to the facility, they were sold on the idea that their loved ones would be in a supervised sober environment to help them beat their addictions. However, what Lyfe Recovery turned out to be was a shell, barely meeting the minimum requirements. Unfortunately, for Joe Tummarello, the minimum for his own needs weren’t met during his time at the Carson City based sober-living facility, which allegedly contributed to his death.

Three family-members were arrested by Special Enforcement Team Deputies of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office after parents of a fugitive harbored their daughter to avoid arrest on a burglary warrant.
According to the police report, Adrianna Vanegas 24, Christine Vanegas 47, and Felipe Antonio Vanegas 53, were arrested in the 2200 block of Mayflower Way Thursday afternoon after it was determined Christina and Felipe were harboring their daughter, Adrianna, who was a fugitive for justice and had an outstanding felony burglary warrant for her arrest.
On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, lost their lives in a senseless crime, when a man entered the Carson City IHOP and opened fire.
Now, eight years later, their memories are kept alive by their friends and family, and by the community they called home.

CARSON CITY — The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment – the most significant milestone towards women’s equality in American history. With the centennial celebration of women’s voting rights on the horizon, the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office is excited to launch its “Nevada Women’s Cultural Resource Project,” which will help tell the story of women’s suffrage and social history in Nevada.
It was a name I read in “Art Pottery of the United States” by Paul Evans that sent me on a journey. That name was Lois Marion Swart and the reason I read it several times is that she had exhibited at the Syracuse Ceramic Nationals in 1954 from my hometown of Carmichael, California. It was the middle of the 1990’s and I just started dialing the phone book. A man picked up the phone on my second call to a Swart family.
The 2019 Silver State Art Festival is the third annual gathering in Carson City of award-winning gourd artists, painters, photographers, wood, glass and metal artists and from all over the Southwest. The festival runs Sept. 13-15 at Fuji Exhibit Hall, Park & Pavilion in Carson City.
CARSON CITY — Overnight single lane closures will be in place on U.S. 395 in Gardnerville the evening of Monday, Sept. 9 through the morning of Thursday, Sept. 12 as the Nevada Department of Transportation repaves sections of roadway surface.
For 60 years, camels, ostriches and even zebras have come to Virginia City for the annual International Camel & Ostrich Races. This hilarious annual tradition dates back to the 1950s, and features jockeys precariously perched on their beasts as they maneuver the track at high speeds, aiming for a win among the cheering audience in this historic mining town.
CARSON CITY — One of the deadliest and most often committed of crimes is impaired driving. It has become a serious safety epidemic in our state. Impaired drivers have consistently been the most common cause of motor vehicle crashes resulting in injuries and deaths in Nevada.
On July 25, Joe Tummarello, a long-term client with Carson City-based sober-living facility Lyfe Recovery, passed away at Carson Tahoe Hospital. By all accounts, a month before his death he had been in fine health for a man of 76. He dealt with COPD and needed an oxygen tank to breathe in the high altitude of northern Nevada, but a check-up with his doctors during May of 2019 showed he was nowhere near the brink of death.
However, after being relocated to Carson City from Lyfe Recovery’s Reno facility, Joe’s medication was withheld and he was denied medical intervention after a rapid deterioration of his health, which ultimately, it is alleged, led to his death.
CARSON CITY — The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada is promoting Lifeline Awareness Week, Sept. 9-13. The Lifeline Assistance Program is a government benefit program supported by the Universal Service Fund that provides a discount on voice or broadband services for qualifying low-income consumers.
