Weekend events include St. Albert sprint triathlon, women’s rugby at SARFC and Rangers soccer.
Sprint triathlon
The 30th annual St. Albert Triathlon starts at 7 a.m. Sunday at Fountain Park Recreation Centre with 193 athletes registered in the individual and try-a-tri events and four sprint teams.
This year’s sprint distance (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-km run) event includes qualifying berths at the 2020 World Triathlon Championships in Edmonton for the first-place finishers in the gender age categories spanning U20 to plus-70 in five-year increments. The qualifiers must be registered with Triathlon Canada in order to compete at worlds.
Last year’s winner was James Thomson, an 18-year-old from St. Albert, in one hour, two minutes and 48 seconds.
James Dean of St. Albert was the runner-up at 1:07:17 and Nicolas Barbalan of Edmonton placed third at 1:08:45.
The first female was Anne Charles of Edmonton at 1:13 for sixth place and coming in a close second by 51 seconds was Andrea Bowman of Spruce Grove for eighth place.
Overall, 66 males and 53 females completed the race, while 21 athletes in the tri-a-try (250-m swim, 10-km bike and 2.5-km run) and five sprint teams went the distance.
The triathlon is hosted by St. Albert Road Runners and Triathlon Club and is sanctioned by the Alberta Triathlon Association.

Women’s rugby
Today’s kickoff times are 12 noon and 2 p.m. for the women’s doubleheader at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
The first match is the fifth versus sixth consolation playoff between SARFC (3-4, 6-5 overall) and the Clan (3-4, 4-7 overall) in the Alberta premier league.
SARFC beat the Clan visitors 31-22 June 27 in round two of the premier fixtures.
The second match is SARFC (2-0, 4-3 overall) versus the Fort McMurray Knights (1-2, 2-6 overall) in round two of the Edmonton Rugby Union division two fixtures.
In round one, SARFC beat the Knights 63-5 in the May 11 season opener in Fort McMurray.
Rangers soccer
The next 35-plus men’s match for the first-place St. Albert Rangers is Sunday at Callingwood Park.
Kickoff is 4 p.m. against second-place Palermo Masters FC (7-2-1).
The Rangers (9-0-2) were winners of nine in a row in the masters’ division 1B league in the Edmonton District Soccer Association before playing Sahara SC (4-3-3) Friday and the score was unavailable at press time.
After 11 matches, Alan Smith was the top division 1B scorer with 19 goals and Kevin O’Kell was third with 12 goals.
