Oregon 6A football final: Famous graduates of Central Catholic and Lake Oswego
Yes, this is about sports (kind of). And yes, that’s a picture of Ashraf Ghani, the president of Afghanistan, shaking hands last week with U.S. President Donald Trump (photo by Alex Brandon, Associated Press).
It’s also a picture of a Lake Oswego High School alum shaking hands with a New York Military Academy alum.
When Central Catholic plays Lake Oswego for the Class 6A football state championship at noon Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium, both schools could have several famous alums cheering from afar, maybe even Afghanistan. Here are some notable graduates from both schools:

Bean is a pioneering gay rights activist, founder of the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. Bean, 71, will go to trial in May on charges of sodomy and third-degree sexual abuse. He’s accused of having sex with a 15-year-old boy in a Eugene hotel room in 2013.

Chisholm has served as a political consultant for Ron Wyden, Jeff Merkley and John Kitzhaber, among many others, but he’s well known in the sports world as well. The 1991 Lake Oswego graduate correctly predicted the winner of the Heisman Trophy every year from 2002 to 2012 on his now-defunct site StiffArmTrophy.com.

A 1994 Central Catholic graduate, the 6-foot-11 Doleac led Utah to the 1998 NCAA men’s basketball championship game and was 12th pick of the 1998 NBA Draft. Doleac played 11 professional seasons before retiring in 2008. He’s now a physics teacher and high school basketball coach in Park City, Utah.

A 2010 Central Catholic graduate, Evans became a soccer star at University of Portland, and in 2013 he was promoted from the Timbers’ U-23 team to the MLS club, becoming the second player to sign a homegrown player contract. He retired in 2015 and now coaches youth soccer in the Portland area.

Ghani has been the president of Afghanistan since 2014. As a foreign exchange student, Ghani graduated with the Lake Oswego class of 1967. An anthropologist by profession, Ghani is pro-modernist and a fond admirer of former Afghanistan’s progressive King Amanullah Khan. Ghani was up for reelection this year, but results of the Sept. 28 presidential polls have been repeatedly delayed amid accusations of misconduct and technical problems with counting ballots, according to the New York Times.

He’s the all-time leading scorer in Oregon big-school boys basketball history with 2,628 points. Love told ESPN last year that he was in the process of establishing a foundation centered on mental health with an emphasis on helping young boys, saying, “I think I’ve found my life’s work.”

Schollander loved football while attending Lake Oswego High School in the early 1960s, but he was too small, so he chose swimming. Good choice. He won a total of five gold medals and one silver medal at the 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics. With four gold medals, he was the most successful athlete at the 1964 Olympics. He lives in Lake Oswego and runs Schollander Development, a real estate development company.
