In her second attempt at the marathon distance, Scottish runner Steph Twell has broken the existing Scottish marathon record.
Liz McColgan’s Scottish marathon record of 2:26:52 has stood for 22 years, but at the weekend, Twell managed to take 12 seconds off the previous record. Twell finished eighth in the race overall, but her performance puts her as the fifth fastest British female marathon runner.
Twell also finished well inside the Olympic qualifying time for the distance, and is aiming for her third Olympic appearance in Tokyo next year. The British Olympic team will be announced in December.
Twell shared a photo crossing the finish line on Instagram with the caption, “Woke up to realise how big meeting my goals were yesterday. Olympic qualifying time, PB and a Scottish record to boot! A wonderful event held here by @frankfurtmarathon. My build up hasn’t been straightforward, considered normal or even advanced but marathon running has taught me to continue to have a free mind!
And whilst I’ve self coached myself from spring, this build up I’ve had to turn ME into WE. We never really run alone, even though it may feel that way at times” before going on to thank her team.
