We all know that running is good for us.
It burns calories and builds strength, clears our heads and improves cardiovascular health. But getting started can sometimes be the toughest part.
We enlisted the help of personal trainer and running coach Ben Seymour to share his tips and tricks for people new to running, or those getting back into it.
Invest in a pair of great running shoes
We spend so much time on our feet on a daily basis, so it is very important your footwear suits your needs mechanically and supportively. Taking care of the body is a necessity and having the proper footwear is paramount for all types of runners.
Look for running shoes specific to your needs and the type of training you’re doing. Under Armour’s new suite of UA HOVR run shoes are designed with that in mind. I have put my UA HOVR Sonic 2 shoes through over 800km of running and they still feel great. I’m looking forward to testing out the UA HOVR Infinite’s in my upcoming long distance training.
Track your progress with an app
It’s a great way to get instant feedback. I use MapMyRun which tracks a variety of metrics and data, including distance, pace, stride length and more. Bonus, it’s built into all the new UA HOVR run suite of shoes!
Train specifically for your goals
Setting a goal or entering an event is a great way to motivate yourself to get back into or start running.
If you’re planning on taking on a full marathon I would recommend starting with running for time. For someone who’s never done one I would suggest finding somewhere flat and run for around 30-45mins. Don’t worry about the pace, just be consistent. Try this 2-3 times a week and then increase the time each week by 15-45mins depending on how you feel. Once you’ve got the time on your legs (3-4 hours), then you can focus on picking up the pace and include some interval running!
It’s okay to take a walking break when you need
You do you! If you feel like your heart rate is too high, try to slow your pace down slightly and allow your heart rate to lower. If you can’t bring this down while running, then take a short walking break.
Consider joining a running group
Some people can be intimidated by running groups if they are just starting out, but it can also be a great way to get some guidance. Some groups train for upcoming events specifically which is awesome!
Just start
Trust me, it will be worth it. Remember to also warm up before your run and recover well post run so you can repeat it all sooner!
